Obituary

Darlene “Dar” Erickson Nupen went to be with her maker in Heaven on July 13, 2020. She was born in Bryant, SD, on April 3, 1937, in the middle of a snowstorm. She was the fifth child of Edward and Helen Erickson. She joined one brother, Curtis, and sisters, Lily, Jeanette, and LaVonne. She grew up in Bryant, excelling in athletics and cheerleading as a Bryant Scotty. After graduation, she moved to Rapid City with friends where she met and married, Jay Masten. Four daughters were born to this union; Beth, Laramie, WY, Darci (Jeff), Hill City, Kari (Lloyd), Whitewood, and Marnie (Shannon), Piedmont. In 1971, she married Curtis Nupen. They had one son together, Ryan (Valerie), Laramie WY. Also, with this union, she added three step- children; Terri (Albert), Trudi (Rick), and Brad (Sonya), all of Brookings. Curt and Dar were married for 48 years and were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
For 20 years, Dar kept busy raising all of her kids. When the youngest, Ryan, started school she went to work as a Special Education paraprofessional, which she enjoyed for years. She was a charter member of Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church and Piedmont Valley American Legion Auxiliary. She continued her involvement by playing, and many times winning, at Bingo and Texas Hold’em at the Legion with her pals.
Her children and grandchildren will remember her for making all the holidays so special. Her house was ALWAYS filled with love and laughter, LOTS of LAUGHTER. She made every day exciting. Dar had a beautiful voice and passed her love for music onto her children and grandchildren. Her favorite past time was fishing with every and anyone that would go. The world will be a little dimmer without her, but Heaven sure got a whole lot brighter. She has given us so many wonderful memories and stories. Dar will be missed by all who had the pleasure of sharing her life.
A celebration of Dar’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2020, at Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church. Due to the Covid crap, family only inside. Friends are invited to listen ‘Drive-In’ style in their vehicles in the church parking lot. The service will be transmitted to their radio. Interment will be held at a later date in Bryant, SD.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the youth programs of Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church.

Curt and all my special cousins, Dar really loved family, she always asked about Ali and Erick. I like to believe all the sisters are chatting it up and Dar's giving Linell a hard time. I really regret not getting out to see her. Stay strong together, love and prayers, Steve and Lisa

Dear Family,

I am so sorry to hear of Dar's passing. She was a strong passionate woman; loving her family and caring so much for young children, youth and young adults. I will remember visiting her at church, while she was at home...either on the porch watching the birds from the deck or even sitting on the floor. One day she had just slid down to the floor and that is where I found her....and well....we just sat there and visited because that is where she was comfortable. I smile when I remember her. She is celebrating and no doubt watching you all from her eternal home......yup waiting for you on the porch...with coffee.

Dar was a great lady. I worked with Curtis and he was so close to her and took such good care of her. Thinking about you Curtis, keep your memories close to your heart.
