Obituary

Gary Kenneth Vig was born in Sturgis, SD, on May 4, 1950. He was born the second of three children to Kenneth and Dagny (Kvernan) Vig of Stoneville, SD. He lived on the Kvernan homestead until 1958 when they moved to the Old Stoneville Road location. He went to grade school at Stoneville and graduated from Sturgis Brown High School in 1968. He married his wife of 50 years, Sharlene Edna (Schulze) Vig on August 7, 1969. They were blessed with two children; Lori Lynn (Vig) Nonnast born August 31, 1971, and Tery Kenneth Vig born April 20, 1973.
During those early years of marriage, Gary attended Black Hills State University, while also working swing shift at American Colliod. He completed his studies at Western Dakota Vo-Tech where he received an Associate’s Degree in Building Construction and Design. He then established his own construction company, Vig Custom Homes of Belle Fourche.
In 1979, Gary took his wife and children to where he felt most at home, the family ranch three miles west of Stoneville. With the help of friends and family, they built a new home where many wonderful memories were created.
In 1985, he started a Farmers Insurance Group Agency in Belle Fourche, which he operated until 1999. With the help of his son, he continued to operate the ranch until 2004.
After retirement, Gary and Sharlene enjoyed traveling. Some of their favorite places included Alaska and Norway. In Norway, they were fortunate enough to visit the Kvernan historical homestead, which has been in the family since the 1700’s.
Gary never left the ranching life far behind, as he still worked part time on a friend's ranch near Belle Fourche. This is where his passion for flying was fostered over several years. He also spent many miles on the road driving truck for various friends.
Gary’s idea of living life to the fullest was to sacrifice himself for others and be faithful to his God, his family, and his friends. He spent the later part of his years caring for his wife in her declining health. His dedication and strength were seen by all and will be truly missed.
Gary, 69, died peacefully in his sleep at home on January 11, 2020.
He is survived by his wife, Sharlene of Belle Fourche; children, Lori (Vig) Nonnast of Hill City, Tery and his wife, Tonya Vig of Belle Fourche; grandson, Gavin Nonnast of Hill City; sister, Janice (Vig) and Clark Arends of Enning; brother, Kevin and his wife, Debby Vig of Stoneville; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gary felt very fortunate to have made friends with several people whom he kept dear to his heart for many decades and cherished as though they were family.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Dagny Vig.
A memorial has been established.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2020, at Black Hills Gospel Assembly, 19020 Gospel Lane, Belle Fourche, SD. Burial will follow at the Fairpoint Cemetery.

Whenever my brother, Jay, came to town, he made it a point to connect with Gary, a life-long friend of his. We would visit and go out to eat and reminisce. We were shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Our family will always cherish our memories of Gary. Linda Colton-Adams
