Obituary

Mary Ellen “Pat” as she was affectionately known, was described as sweet and gentle by all that have reached out since her passing. She didn’t realize how many people were affected by her kind nature, quiet ways, and devotion to God, family, and friends.
She was born in Mitchell, SD on September 1, 1925 to Lewis J. and Florence Ellen (Langen) Justman. She was raised in Plankinton, SD on a farm. She graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1943. She attended one year of college in Yankton, SD, and taught in a country school. Pat had wonderful memories of those years. She had an adventurous streak, leaving South Dakota to live with her sister in Laramie, WY. She met her husband, James, there. They were married February 21, 1946.
She and James lived in Laramie, Pinedale, and Sundance, WY. They moved to Rapid City, SD in 1969. They raised their 5 children, enjoying skiing, fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, canning, and a little square dancing. She could be caught doing the Irish jig in the kitchen. Pat loved sewing, crafts, and especially enjoyed clipping articles out of the newspaper. She was known for her “Wimpie” Burgers at the Crook County Fair. She was active in the church, taught Catechism, became a Boy/Cub Scout leader, constantly baked for local events, and helped with the community any way she could.
Mary Ellen “Pat” Larsen, 95, died Monday, September 14, 2020, at her home in Sturgis.
She is survived by her children, John (Terri-deceased) Larsen, Patti (Charlie) Kocher, Jim (Linda) Larsen, Jerry (Colleen) Larsen, and Jeanne (Clint) Blalock. Her life was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2020, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with Father Timothy Castor officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. Committal services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery.

I always remember our family vacations out to the Black Hills every summer to see the Larsens. It was always the highlight of every summer. I especially remember my aunt's beautiful warm smile and sweet voice. I always got a big hug from her. She took special time with me every visit to sit down and ask about whatever I had going on in school and over the summer. I liked asking her about her parents because her dad (my granddad) passed before I was born. Most of what I know about them I learned from Mary Ellen. Love & Prayers Aunt Mary Ellen, you'll be missed.
