Adelaide H. Speed, 89, Spearfish, SD, died Friday, February 16, 2007, at the Tender Care Assisted Living Center in Spearfish.
Visitation will be Monday, February 19, 2007 from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Denzel Nonhof and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Adelaide was born December 9, 1917, at Chalk Butte, SD to Amos and Mary (Ronning) Chowen. She attended rural school and then the Stoneville and Sturgis High Schools. She graduated from Sturgis High School in 1938. She married John L. Speed on November 19, 1938, at Sturgis, SD. Following their marriage, they farmed near Union Center and later operating the Union Center Store until 1951 when they returned to ranching. In 1965, John and Adelaide began to raise their two nieces, Fae and Colleen. Following the death of her husband in 1974, Adelaide continued living on the ranch until 1976 when she moved to Sturgis. She moved to Spearfish in November of 2003.
Adelaide will be remembered by announcing the Union Center weather and news on the KBHB radio station and her famous saying, "It's a beautiful day here in Union Center." She was a member of the Sturgis Senior Citizens Center, Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, Mato Paha Chapter 98, O.E.S., Union Center Baptist Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
A memorial has been established to the Hospice of the Northern Hills.
Survivors include two nieces, Colleen (Bob) Bertolotto, Sturgis, and Fae (John) Marshall, Spearfish; and two sisters, Bernice Grant, Vale, SD, and Mildred Keeney, Cashmere, WA; grandchildren, Denise (Cody) Weyer, their children, Tristen and Trinity, Marcus, SD, Scott (Alysha) Bertolotto, their children, Tyra, Billy, and Bobby, Fort Meade, SD, Shannon (Corey) Morgan, their children, Samantha Jo, Jayce, and Adrianna, Rapid City, SD, Shaun (Samantha) Marshall, their children, Shyanne, Shane, and Taylynn, Rapid City, SD, Justin Speed, Spearfish, SD, and Krystle Marshall and her fiance, Dale Auddis, Spearfish, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and one sister.
