Adeline Christina (Lenser) Zylstra, 92, Wagner and formerly of Rapid City, passed away on Sunday morning, February 8, 2009, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Adeline was in the company of family, which included her children, Eddie, Kenneth, and Sherlyn, their spouses, and granddaughters, Christina and Laura with fiancé, Dan Kaiser.
Adeline was born December 19, 1916, to August and Alvina Lenser of Dixon, SD. She was raised on the family farm along with her three brothers and four sisters. On March 17, 1937, she married Oscar Zylstra of Springfield, SD. Oscar and Adeline made their home in Springfield where their first child, Eddie, was born. Then they moved to Winner where they had a son, Donald Lee and a daughter; both of the children died at birth. While still in Winner, they had another son, Kenneth. In 1948, they moved to Wagner where they purchased the Wagner Super Ette grocery store. It was in Wagner where their daughter, Sherlyn, was born. They owned the grocery store in Wagner from 1948 until 1968. In 1968, they closed the grocery store and opened a laundromat. In the early 50's, they moved to Sioux Falls and bought the Western Meat Locker. After a few years, they moved back to Wagner to run the Super Ette. In May of 1976, they moved to the Black Hills. Oscar died March 3, 1981, in Rapid City. Adeline continued to live in Rapid City until May 2006 when she moved back to Wagner. Adeline was always an active member in her church and she loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include her sons, Ed (Marilyn) Zylstra of Wagner and Ken (Dorothy) Zylstra of Sturgis; her daughter, Sherlyn (Jerry) Waters of Sioux Falls; one brother, Reinhart (Elsie) Lenser of Winner; one sister, Helen Melton of Albany, MN; two granddaughters, Christina (Mark) Walsh of Renner and Laura Zylstra (Dan Kaiser) of Aberdeen; three grandsons, Jason (Tara) Zylstra of Sturgis and Aaron and Christopher Koehn of Sioux Falls; three great-granddaughters, Madison Zylstra of Sturgis and Madelyn and Lauren Walsh of Renner.
Adeline was preceded in death by her parents, August and Alvina Lenser; son, Donald Lee; infant daughter; her husband, Oscar; two brothers, Ernest and Charlie; and three sisters, Martha, Hattie, and Lena.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Visitation will resume Thursday one hour prior to the services at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 4550 S. Hwy 16, Rapid City with Rev. Duane Duley officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
