Alan Jeffers Kinney, 75 of Black Hawk, passed away Sunday December 11, 2016, at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Ft. Meade, SD.
Alan was born September 23, 1941, in Amesbury, MA, to Hermann and Ruth (Jeffers) Kinney. Alan met the love of his life, Joyce Fall, at Uncle Jack's Dairy Corner in Newburyport, MA. On October 5, 1963, they vowed their love at the ICC church in Newburyport. Alan Joined the United States Air Force in 1962, serving until 1970 as a lineman and school instructor, as well as during the Viet Nam Conflict. Alan took what he learned in the military and began working for Southwestern Bell as a Lineman and Engineer, and a valid member of the Southwestern Bell Pioneers. He moved his family to Texas where he and Joyce raised their 3 loving children: Bridget A. Hooper (Robert), Battle Mountain, NV; Gregory C. Kinney (Mary), Lillington, NC; and Jennifer B. Kinney, Summerset, SD.
Alan loved spending time with his family as well as being out in the community. He was an Umpire for Canyon, TX, Little League for 15 years. He loved working with the kids, as he was a big kid himself, always with a mischievous smile. Alan had many talents that brought joy to his family. He loved to work with leather, making many gifts over the years and he showed his love of music by playing the organ, anything from classical music to classical rock. After retiring, Joyce and Alan spent time travelling, fulltime RVing, and enjoyed meeting new people and seeing new places. During his travels, his favorite place was working at the Royal Gorge Bridge in Canon City, CO.
Alan was "Papa" to his four grandchildren: Brandon W. Mills, Perry, OK; Bailey Mills-Kolander, Jackson, MN; Christopher A. Kinney, Lillington, NC; and Eric G. Kinney, Lillington, NC. He is also survived by his sister's four amazing children: Kathy, Wendy, Laurie and David; and his wife's brother's children, Stephanie and Michelle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hermann and Ruth Kinney; one sister, Joan K. Drew; and two brothers-in-law, Michael Fall and Timothy Fall.
Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Black Hills,Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Andrzej Wyrostek officiating. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
