Obituary

LeRoy was born, October 2, 1932, to Elmer and Cassie Johnston in Alliance, NE. At the age of 9, his family moved to Deadwood, SD, where his father became a railroad engineer for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railway.

In 1950, LeRoy graduated from Deadwood High School and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served 3 years spending most of that time in Korean waters.

He married Myrtle French in 1952 and to this union seven children were born. In 2000, LeRoy married Donna Luze in Deadwood, SD. In 1992, LeRoy retired from Homestake Gold Mine after 39 years working underground. Since then, he has truly been "living the dream." LeRoy spent most of his time hunting, fishing and enjoying his caboose located near Rochford, SD. He has left a rich legacy of loving the outdoors, babies and dogs with all of his off-spring.

Albert "LeRoy" Johnston, 83, Spearfish, died Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the David M Dorsett Healthcare Community in Spearfish.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Donna Johnston, Spearfish; one sister, Norma Lore, Rapid City; seven children, Pearl (Ted) Miller, Spearfish, Ed (Kathy) Johnston, Gillette, Pam Kracht and partner Dave Watkins, Upton, Norm (Deneen) Johnston, Brookings, Randy (Lori) Johnston, Spearfish, Ronnie (Laurie) Johnston, Rapid City, and Rick (Ranae) Johnston, Orofino, ID; and three step-children, Jim Luze Jr., Lead, Vonda (Shane) Storley, Britton, SD, and Todd (Kathy) Luze, Lead. He was the proud grandfather of 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; step-daughter, Linda Luze; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bob Totino officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
