Obituary

Alice Harriet McFarland, 94, Sturgis, died Saturday, December 24, 2011, at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at the Sturgis Church of Christ (201 Old Stone Road) with Pastor Josh Floyd officiating. Burial will be at the Pine Lawn Cemetery in Rapid City.

Alice was born December 12, 1917, at Rapid City, SD, to Leo and Martha (Raybourne) Ashland. She attended rural country school on Elk Creek and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1936.

She married Clarence McFarland on December 31, 1936, at her parent's home on Elk Creek. The couple raised their family and ranched on Elk Creek until retiring to Rapid City in 1967.

Alice was a member of the Elk Creek Extension Club, Order of Eastern Star, Cowbelles, First Presbyterian Church of Rapid City, and the Churches Ladies Aide. She volunteered for the Red Cross and Sister Kenny.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rapid City until she moved to Sturgis in 1995 when she joined the Church of Christ in Sturgis.

She enjoyed playing the piano and violin. She loved talking with family and friends about the old days as well as sewing and crocheting. She also liked to play cards with family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Tom McFarland, Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren, Tom Szoke, West Covina, CA, Tracy (Joe) Kennedy, Bertrand, NE, Teresa McFarland, Alliance, NE, Michael McFarland, Pine Ridge, SD, Angie (Jim) White, Birmingham, AL, Rebekah (Christian) Baker, Portland, OR, and Vanessa (Ryan) Alexander, New Bloomfield, MO; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Wurnig, Sturgis; special niece, Marty Hanson, Sturgis; and daughter-in-law, Lillian Witt, Pine Ridge, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Alice Ann Szoke; son, John McFarland; and grandson, Wesley McFarland.

A memorial has been established.
