Obituary

Angela Blaalid Sedig, 91, Whitewood and Rapid City, died December 19, 2009 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Angela was a dedicated servant of our Lord and ministered throughout her life through church music and nursing.

She was born June 10, 1918 in Mitchell, SD, to Justus and Sophie (Solberg) Blaalid of Lane, SD, where Angie attended school until moving to Estelline, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1936. She moved to Washington, D.C. to live with sisters and enrolled in nursing school at Sibley Memorial Hospital, serving three years as Class President and Chapel Organist, receiving her R.N. Degree in 1942. She worked at St. Elizabeth's and Children's Hospital in D.C. until moving back to South Dakota. She married Stanley M. Sedig of Bruce, SD, in 1948 before moving to Newcastle, WY, where they owned the Club Café as well as Angela nursing at Newcastle General Hospital. In 1962, Stan and Angie moved to Rapid City and Angie again worked nursing at St. John's Hospital. Finally, in 1966, they moved to Whitewood, SD, where they operated Sedig Nursing Home for Veterans. Stanley passed away in 1975 but Angie Continued to operate the nursing home until 1986. A two story castle stands to this day at the Whitewood nursing home, built stone by stone by her then 82 year old father, Justus Blaalid.

Angela Sedig grew up in a family that fostered Christian values and beliefs, not the least of which was the principle that sharing of time and talents is a necessary component of life. As a "nervous 13 year old", Angie made her first appearance as a church organist in her home church. She continued a long "tour of organist duty" totaling seven decades of service - some of which were Grace Lutheran in Newcastle, WY; Atonement Lutheran in Rapid City; and Immanuel Lutheran in Whitewood, the latter for 34 years where she also directed adult and children's choirs.

Tender memories of Angela include her great love for her cats and she was an avid sports fan. There are many Black Hills football contest hopefuls who will have a better chance of winning their weekly newspaper competitions since Angie has played her last game. She enjoyed scrabble, community bingo, and traveling to see her two grandchildren.

Survivors include her three sons, Joseph Huppmann, Wilmington, NC, Norman Sedig, Cody, WY, and Timothy Sedig, Rapid City; a sister, Gwenith Sietsema, age 96, Ft. Morgan, CO; a brother, Orvis Blaalid, age 94, Montgomery, AL; two grandchildren, Derek Huppmann, USMC, and Kate Huppmann, USN; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stanley Sedig, and a sister, Wilma Lawrence, Woodbridge, VA.

Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m., Monday, December 28, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, SD, with Rev. David Baer officiating. Immediately after there will be a fellowship gathering followed by burial at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
