Obituary

Ann Marie Renner passed peacefully at the Spearfish Healthcare Center on October 28, 2025, knowing that family, friends, and Jesus loved her. Ann was born to Gordon and Jessie Renner in Deadwood, South Dakota, on October 25, 1956.

Ann spent the happiest days of her childhood riding horses with friends throughout the Maitland area, where her parents owned a cabin. One of Ann's favorite childhood memories was the day her dad bought her a pony named Dollie. Ann often joked that she never learned to ride a bicycle because she had a horse. She participated in the Saddle Club and spent her Weekends at the "Play Days" sponsored by the group. Ann made many lifelong friends at the Saddle Club who were at her side during her last days.

Ann loved being part of the Days of '76 Parade. In her early years, she rode a horse or was part of a group representing Chinatown. And lastly, being part of the Central City gang that spun on the wheels of the old-time fire cart in the parade.

Ann had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, whom she affectionately called 'the kids.' Over the years, her home was filled with their joyful presence, each one a true member of the family. Her photos overflow with wagging tails, happy grins, and a few oversized 'lap dogs' who never quite grasped their size.

Ann traded in the horse for a Harley-Davidson Sportster, claiming the open road. Long before it was common, she learned to ride her Harley while most women were still perched on the back seats behind their boyfriends. Her brother Steve used to say, "If I ever want to learn to ride, I'll have to ask my baby sister to teach me." And he meant it—Ann led with confidence, grit, and a grin that showed she was born to blaze her own trail.

Ann lived life on her own terms, moving from the Black Hills to Juneau, Alaska, in the 1990s, where she met and married Michael Morgan.

Ann found her calling in Juneau, where she started the career she loved—serving as both a CNA and activities director in a small nursing home. Every day, she greeted residents with a smile and genuine affection, treating each one like family. So, it was only fitting that when she and Michael decided to marry, they did so right there in the nursing home, surrounded by the people who had become part of their lives. Their beloved dogs, Laska and Molly, were often visitors too—bringing joy, wagging tails, and comfort to everyone they met.

Ann continued caring for people all her life and was affectionately called "the bus driver" in the trailer park where she spent her last years. Ann knew everyone and bought icy pops for neighborhood kids. She was the best friend anyone could ask for, which showed when her friends rallied around her at the end of her life, lovingly caring for her and her dogs, Molly and Copper.

Ann is survived by her two brothers, Jack Renner (Patti) of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Steve Renner (Debbie) of Rapid City, South Dakota. She also leaves behind her nephew, Dade Swanson (Kirby), whom she affectionately called her "little brother," along with a group of nieces and nephews who brought her endless joy. A wide circle of dear friends enriched Ann's life—most notably Pam, Judy, Marcie, Ivy, Ally, Connie, and Cindy—whose love, laughter, and loyalty were woven into her daily life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Gordon and Jessie Renner; her husband, Michael Morgan; her sister, Diane Renner; and her great-nephew, Cassius Renner.

A graveside service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
