Arvid N Nelson was called home to Our Lord Tuesday 1-11-11 at the age of 93.
Committal services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 21, 2011 at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis with Chaplain Ralph Vencill officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and family will gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Born at home to Oscar and Emma Nelson in Terraville SD, Arvid walked to Central City every morning before school to deliver milk and eggs from their dairy farm. He attended school in Terraville and Lead and finished 9th grade at LHS. At age 17 he went to work in the CCC camp in Custer State Park. He joined the army in 1942, spent time in the tropics and his unit was the first one in Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped. He married Agnes (Dupras) Nelson in 1956. Most of his life was spent ranching in the Nemo area and 30+ years at Homestake Mining Company. He is a lifetime member of the VFW. He was an avid hunter, who guided during hunting season, a fisherman, and a horseman. He loved sitting in his chair and enjoying the wildlife out his window. He was so fortunate to have his caregivers Annabell Luze and her daughter Dorla Harrison always nearby.
Survivors include his sister, Elsie Morton, Birmingham AL; daughters, Judy (Tom) Frazier, Renton WA, Kristine (Wayne)Hise, Huntington Beach, CA; 4 grandchildren, John and Jolene Kalmbach Renton WA,Justin and Adam Hise, Huntington Beach CA; 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Arvid was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Agnes and stepdaughter Phyllis Storsve.
Services will be held January 21,2011 at 10:00 am at Black Hills National Cemetery.
