Obituary

Barbara was born in Sturgis, SD, to Roy and Lillian (Babcock) Anders on October 9, 1928. She spent her childhood in Sturgis and Portland, OR, and then returned to Deadwood, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1946.

Barbara met Verlynne "Squirt" Larson and they were married in 1947 and had one daughter, Sharon. Barbara divorced in 1956 and went to work for MDU where then she met her second husband, Albert "Ab" Baier. They were married in 1963 at Belle Fourche, SD. They made their home in Deadwood until moving to Rapid City the following summer. Barbara worked many years at Whitaker and Mattson where she was a bookkeeper until she retired in the late 80's. Barbara and Ab were snowbirds after retirement making their winter home in Casa Grande, AZ, until Ab's passing in 2008.

Barbara Baier, 89, Rapid City, passed comfortably at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 4, 2018.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Mike) Ragatz, grandson, Rob (Lynnette) Ragatz, and great-grandchildren, Jake and Madie Wolfe, all of Rapid City, SD; special nieces, Doneen Ross and Barbara Jean Anders; special friends, Yvonne Weyrich and family, and Mary Jane Clauser and her sister, Grace (Lawrence) Calvetti, and extended family. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Lila; brothers, Ed and Don; and her parents.

Barbara enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was an avid crochet-er and reader. She was very independent, stubborn, and strong willed. Being handicapped, she still pursued her goals and dreams in life. She was the most loving, caring mother, grandmother, and friend. A memorial has been established to "Shirley's Adult Day Center" where she spent some of the most wonderful last months of her life, making new friends and enjoying herself.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jil Jennewein officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
