Obituary

Benno Frank Roller, 74, Rapid City, died at his residence on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with a rosary and Christian prayer beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with Fr. Mark McCormick officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Benno was born January 3, 1934, at New England, ND, to Leo and Emma (Jirges) Roller. He attended school at Sheffield, ND, near New England. After completing his education he joined the Air Force and served in Okinawa.

Benno married Regina Hushka at Dickinson, ND, on September 16, 1957.

Benno was honorably discharged from the Rushmore (Ellsworth) Air Force Base near Rapid City in 1959. The family moved back to North Dakota where Benno went to electrical and refrigeration school. He worked at the local Gambles store in New England before returning to Rapid City where he was employed by Larkin and Jones. The family moved to Brighton, CO, in 1967 where Benno was employed at the Brighton Appliance Store. In the early 70's, they moved back to Rapid City where Benno was again employed by Larkin and Jones and later the Twin City Fruit Company in Deadwood. They moved to Vail, CO, where he worked for Nordic Refrigeration for three years before moving back to Rapid City where he ultimately retired. Benno operated his own appliance service company for many years.

He enjoyed flying his own aircraft until giving up his license. He also enjoyed building and flying model planes.

Benno was a member of the Rapid City Prop Busters.

Survivors include his wife, Regina Roller, Rapid City; two sons, Curtis (Gail) Roller, Liberty, MO, and Zac (Cary) Roller, Rapid City; four daughters, Cheri (Todd) Ernst, Powell, WY, Suzie (Bruce) Blair, Piedmont, Shelly (Doyle) Schrader, Minot, ND, and Zina (Doug) Workman, Granite, CO; one brother, Wenzel Roller, New England, ND; sisters, Diane (Dennis) Schwehr, Thompson Falls, MT, Elsie Miller, Dickinson, ND, and Maggie Roller; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Hills.
