Bernice Viola Ziegler was born February 22, 1922 (2-22-22). Her parents were Carl and Anna (Kaubish) Ziegler. She attended Spring Creek Country School near her home by Bear Butte Lake then went to Sturgis High School and graduated with the class of 1940. After high school, she was employed at Haley's Supermarket.
Robert Murphey was the man who asked her to be his mate. On August 5, 1954, Bernice and Bob were married, making their home at 1835 Junction. However, most of their days were spent on Main Street, while Bob operated Anderson's Hardware, Bernice was busy across the street at Ben Franklins, working as a clerk and bookkeeper for her brother-in-law, Keith McKay.
She was an extra special aunt to those that were privileged to call her so. Bernice was also remembered by all for her kind disposition intermingled with quick and clever witand of course her famous chocolate cake.
Her home the last two and a half years has been at Aspen Grove where one was sure to find her comfortably seated by the fireplace, across from Keith McKay, with welcoming eyes on the opening door to all who entered.
Preceding her death were her parents, Carl (1892-1961) and Anna (1891-1978); her siblings, Louise (1920-1996), Glen (1918-2001), and Beverly (1924-2003); and her husband, Robert Murphey (1928-2011).
On a gorgeous fall morning, September 18, 2019, Bernice left us and was gathered to her people. Genesis 25:8 "Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people." "The Memory of the just is blessed." Proverbs 10:7
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Memorials have been established to Aspen Grove Assisted Living in Sturgis and the Spearfish 7th Day Adventist Church.
