Bernice Ellen Norman, 81, Black Hawk, died Wednesday, October 26, 2006, at the Clarkson-Mountain View nursing home in Rapid City. A memorial has been established to Rapid City Regional Hospice.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 30,2006, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Keith Nelson officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Bernice was born November 2, 1924, at Rapid City, SD, to Ernest and May (Cordes) Gray. She attended the Red Brick School and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1942. She continued her education at the University of Oregon and graduated in 1946. She majored in Spanish, French and English. While in college she played first flute for the University band and orchestra. Upon her return to Rapid City, she played in the Rapid City Municipal Band. Bernice worked at Duhamel's Trading Post, Adel Jewelers and Reptile Gardens. After obtaining her education she taught at Spearfish High School, Cuny Table School and South Junior High in Rapid City. She taught for 26 years.
On July 20, 1947, she married Charles Lange. He died on September 4, 1969. She remarried on June 10, 1978, to Harold Norman. Harold died on March 5, 1988. Bernice enjoyed family and friends. She loved the country life and enjoyed hiking, dancing, riding, fancy work, and travel.
Survivors include her son, Cole Lange (Joy), Oglala; stepdaughter, Karen Bulman (Larry), Rapid City; stepson Eugene Norman, Newcastle, WY; grandsons, Chuck and Chad Wallace, Brad, Bryan, Chance and Casey Ryhe Lange; three step grandsons, Justin and Scott Norman, Jonas Bulman; one step granddaughter, Jennifer Sanchez; special cousin Darlene Kutzler; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Sanchez, Matte Bulman, T.J. Wallace, and Avril Norman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and one son, Casey Lange, in 1990.
