Bertha Carolyn Sorenson, 95, Spearfish, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the Wilmot Community Center in Wilmot, SD, with Ms. Jane Miller and Ms. Beth Arlene Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at the Wilmot Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, February 17, 2013.
Bertha was born on December 7, 1917, in Tripp County, SD, to Charles and Margareta Vogt. Bertha was raised on a farm southwest of Colome, SD, and grew to womanhood there. In 1939, she met her husband, Magnus Sorenson, and was married in 1941. Magnus and Bertha were blessed with two children, Fred (Joyce) and Berniece (Larry). Bertha has six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Bertha and Magnus lived most of their married life on the Sorenson family farm west of Sisseton, SD. In 1969, they retired and moved to Lincoln, NE; but returned to Wilmot, SD, in 1970 to be near their son, Fred. When Magnus took ill, they moved to Brandon, SD, where they lived until his death in 1979. Since November, 1991, Bertha has lived in Spearfish, SD.
Bertha did volunteer work at the High Plains Heritage Museum, the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery, and worked with the RSVP Program. She enjoyed crocheting, putting jigsaw puzzles together, playing Scrabble, and was well known for her lefsa and pie making ability.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Bernie and Larry Lungren of Spearfish, SD; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Sorenson of Wilmot, SD; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Magnus Sorenson; son, Fred Sorenson; parents, Charles and Margareta Vogt; eight brothers, and three sisters, Christian Vogt, William Vogt, Carl Vogt, Michael Vogt, John Vogt, Fred Vogt, Edward Vogt, Albert Vogt, Anna Vogt (McClimans), Elizabeth Vogt (Cheasebro), and Margaret Vogt (Skaw).
