Obituary

Betty (McLaughlin-Conitz) Mischel, 80, of Newell, SD, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. She will be remembered for being an exceptional woman in more ways than can be recounted here. Those who knew her were the benefactors of her kindness, her caring, her encouragement, and her nurturing ways. She was hard working and treasured her time with family; they were her world.

Betty was born the fourth of nine children to John and Hertha Mclaughlin in Hazen, ND, on June 11, 1941. She lost her mother at the age of 10 which led her to take on the responsibility of caring for her siblings and taking on household chores. She graduated from high school in Hazen and moved to Mandan, ND, to work as a dental assistant, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Betty married Kenneth Conitz of New Salem, ND on November 5, 1964. They worked hard operating a dairy farm for many years, while raising their family of three girls. She became an excellent cook – especially known for her kuchen, fleischkueckla and potato salad – and discovered she even liked to sew. After Kenny passed away in 1987, Betty continued to run the dairy farm for a couple of years. She then moved to Bismarck and again worked as a dental assistant and attended Interstate Business College in Bismarck, graduating in 1990, with a degree in Medical Assisting. While living in Bismarck she loved to play Bingo and dance. Her girls have fond memories of Betty teaching them to dance by turning the kitchen into a dance floor. She is remembered by many as always taking time to sit at the kitchen table to visit while drinking a cup of coffee. In 1998, she married Chuck Mischel. They resided in Bismarck until moving to Spearfish in 2005.  Chucked passed away in 2009, at which time Betty moved to Newell to be near her girls and grandchildren

Never one to be idle, she began working in the 'cage' at different Casino's in Deadwood where she enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. She officially retired in 2018, to enjoy cooking for her family, always having something ready in case the grandkids wanted lunch.

Betty loved her family. She is survived by two daughters, Danelle Mutchler, Whitewood, SD, and Deb (TJ) Steele, Newell, SD; grandchildren, Tyler (Jordynn) Mutchler, Megan Dix (Keaton Cummings), Prestyn Novak, Caleb Mutchler, Jacob Rieniets, Layton, and Kayden Steele; great-grandchildren, Tilden Mutchler, and Josie Dix; brothers, John (Jill) McLaughlin, Strasburg, CO, Mike McLaughlin, Hazen, ND, and Jerome McLaughlin, Gillette, WY; sisters, Mary Ann (Syl) Schutt, Hazen, ND, and Patricia (Neil) Blume, Herman, MN; brother-in-law, Jerome Weiand, Fergus Falls, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by daughter, Denise Rieniets; son-in-law, JD Mutchler; first husband, Kenny; second husband, Chuck; parents, John and Hertha (Miller) McLaughlin; two brothers, Lester, and Robert; 1 sister, Margaret; 4 nieces; 1 nephew; paternal grandparents, Jack (John) and Margaret (Moloney) McLaughlin, and maternal grandparents, Rudolf and Mary (Reinhardt) Miller.

A celebration of Betty's life will be held on her birthday, June 11, 2022, in Hazen, ND, with a gathering to follow in Beulah, ND.
