Obituary

Bonnie Jean Tarun, 98, of Lake Forest, Illinois died February 15, 2017 at Lake Forest Place, Lake Forest, Illinois.

She was born August 5, 1918 a t Sturgis to Robert and Theresa (Berg) Cruickshank. She attended the University of Wyoming and then followed her 6th grade sweetheart Donald W. Tarun of Sturgis to Chicago, supporting him in medical school while she earned an R.N. at Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital .She married Don Tarun at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, SD, on August 30, 1941.She and Dr. Tarun lived in Chicago for sixty - five years until his death in 2005. They were members of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago.

She loved her family, her Black Hills heritage, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Cubs. She was especially devoted to her two sisters the late Barbara Ann Lutz (Dr.J. Frederick) of Sturgis and Lois Tilgner (Dwight) of Sioux Falls. The three Cruickshank girls were raised in a 1917 Sturgis home that was held in the family including the successor owner Tarun and Lutz families for a century.

In Chicago Bonnie Jean Tarun was a Girl Scout troop leader, president of Sauganash PTA and chair of the Lake Forest Antiques Show. "My Mother could lead a dozen Girl Scouts, fifty antique dealers or a hundred parents into action. Everyone knew she was organized, of great humor and above, all dependable. She in her reliable warm way personified "The Greatest Generation.'" said her son Bob of San Francisco.

In addition to her son, she is survived by her daughter, Terry Tarun Hall , Hanover, NH.; granddaughters, Anna Hall Dorchester, MA., Bonnie Jean Hall Walker (Edward) Millbury, MA., Morgan Hall Palac (Jeremy) Los Gatos, CA., Abigail E. and Aimee Dakota Tarun Chicago, IL; grandsons, Tyler V. Tarun Chicago, IL, Parker D. Tarun San Francisco, CA.,

She is also survived by Anne Lutz Dravigny (Michel) of Green Valley, AZ, Lt. Col, (Ret) Charles F. Lutz (Mary Jane) of Sturgis, Bruce F. Lutz of Columbia Falls, MT, Carol Tilgner Vouga of St. Louis, MO and Sandra Tilgner Marckmann (Darold) of Hurst, TX; and five great-grandchildren. She was blessed by two extraordinary and loving care givers in her last year's Faye Brown and Christine Shaurette-Safy.

Services will be held Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Reverend Jane Ireland officiating. Dr. Tarun was a Captain in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Bagpiper Susan Jean Peterson, a Cruickshank by marriage, will play Amazing Grace on a splendidly warm February morning in the Black Hills.
