In Boyd’s (Pug’s) words:
Boyd Daane
Born November 8, 1931, at Opal, South Dakota to Harold and Emma (Taylor) Daane. He grew up in Sturgis, graduating from Sturgis High School in 1950. Served in the Army 1952 – 1954, 15 months in Korea, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
On May 11, 1957, Boyd married Marlene J. Dietrich in Sioux Falls, SD. Together they raised two sons, Doug and Gary. He graduated from Black Hills State College in 1962 and worked 30 years at Ft. Meade V.A. as a Manual Arts Therapist.
Boyd was a member of the V.F.W. and a 30 year member of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Dept.
From the perspective of those that knew him well:
Though the above is an accurate, albeit partial account of the things Boyd did in life, those of us who knew him can attest to the fact that the way he lived his life was that of a giving, humble, hard-working, dedicated, and loving human being. Having had the fortunate opportunity to be a part of his life, we will do our best to carry his legacy forward and always remember his example of how a great man lives life.
In his younger days, Boyd worked in the family business, Daane Bros. Construction Co., and was an experienced heavy equipment operator. While working at Fort Meade, he was highly regarded by his coworkers and patients alike, many who became lifelong friends. Boyd was a highly skilled craftsman and excelled in many areas.
He is survived by his two sons: Doug (Allyson) Daane (Rapid City, SD) and Gary (Glenda) Daane (Pinedale, WY). He has three grandchildren, Jason Daane (Rapid City, SD), Erin (Aaron) Sanders (Sturgis, SD), and Chancy Daane (Pinedale, WY). He has 3 great-grandchildren, Lydia Weekly (Rapid City, SD) Rowan Handshue (Spearfish, SD) and Max Sanders (Sturgis, SD). Along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Boyd loved his family, and times spent with them created special memories for all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mary Emma Daane and infant sister. His beloved wife of 61 years Marlene J. Daane, brother Albert Daane and his wife, Rose, his sister Rose Hettich and her husband Willard, along with nephews Terry Hettich and Bruce Daane.
Boyd will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the community.
