Obituary

Carlyn Gertrude House, 95, Belle Fourche and formerly of Whitewood, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Belle Fourche Healthcare Center.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon to 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 23, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Lloyd Lemke officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Carlyn was born December 28, 1916, at home in Ranch Creek, MT. to Emo and Hannah (Tophoven) Walloth. Carlyn was one of seven children. She attended grade school at Walloth School in Ranch Creek. She attended high school in Broadus, MT, and then obtained her teaching certificate from college in Dillon, MT. She taught grades 1 - 8 at a country school from 1936 to 1940.

Carlyn married Mike House in 1940 and she became a housewife. They adopted a daughter, Sandy, and also raised Mike's brother's three children, along with her sister's daughter for a few years. Their first house was a sheep wagon. They moved to Newell in 1942 and lived there until moving to Buffalo, SD, in 1947. In 1952, they moved to Akaska, SD, where they bought a farm and raised milk cows. They sold the dairy farm in 1974 and moved to Mobridge, SD, where they bought the airport. In 1976, they moved to the Black Hills and lived in Nemo, Boulder Canyon, and in 1996, settled in Whitewood. Mike and Carlyn were married 62 years.

Carlyn loved picnics, playing cards, visiting with friends, and going on trips to Arizona during the winter. She was also active in ladies aide and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandy (Gary) Smith, Whitewood; niece, Judy (Jim) Holzworth and families, Pierre, SD; nephew, Jim (Arlo) House and daughter, Casper, WY; sister-in-law, Ruth Walloth, Kalamazoo, MI; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brother, Lee and Curtis; and four sisters, Peg, Maddy, Lorraine, and Jeanette.

Memorials have been established to Trinity Lutheran Church, Our House, and Belle Fourche Healthcare Center.
