Obituary

Carrie Lynn Kappes, 64, of Lead, SD, died Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Monument Health Rapid City hospital.

Carrie was born on October 28, 1958, in Madison WI.  She moved to Superior, WI, as a toddler.  She graduated from Superior Senior High in 1976 and was a proud Billings Parker. She volunteered many hours at Our Saviors Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, as well as co-advisor of the youth group known as Luther League. She worked for Wisconsin Conservation Corp, Murphy Oil/Husky, and many various jobs throughout her life.

Carrie married her partner in crime, Scott A Kappes on June 6, 1987. Their life was filled with adventures that took them all over the United States. Whether it was on motorcycle, truck, corvette, horses, or side by side they enjoyed life together. Meeting new friends everywhere they went. Her personality and smile seemed to draw people to her wherever she traveled.

Although she lived in Northern WI, most of her life, her heart was always in the West. In 2014, her dream of living in the West came true. They packed up their house, horses, toys, dogs, and began their new journey. What a journey it was. Meeting so many new people who quickly became family to her. She entertained her many visitors with her famous "Nickel Tour". So proud to share her vast knowledge of the history of the Black Hills (which she learned from her time at the Days of 76 Museum) with the numerous friends and family who came to visit. She shared her love of horses with too many youngsters to count. Always giving her time to anyone who wanted to take a quick ride around the yard. Even packing the horses up and bringing them to the Fort Meade Veterans Home in Sturgis, SD, so the veteran cowboys could enjoy interactions with her horses. She was always giving of her time.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, Scott Kappes; mother, Audrey Larson; sisters: Christine (Dave) Carlson, and Cindy (Chris) Morgan; sister-in-law, Kerri (Martin) Gontjes; nieces and nephews: Matt Carlson, Tara (Cody) Steltz, Kyle (Sarah) Morgan, Anna Morgan, Winter (Chloe) Gontjes, Journey (Alex) Dockham, and Tesla Gontjes; great-nieces and nephews: Avelyn, Elena, and Hudson Steltz, Lucas Morgan, and Elena Gontjes; along with her trusty four-legged companions, Shooter and Smoke (the millennial).

She was reunited with her father, Thomas Larson, mother and father-in-law, Leonard and Karen Kappes, and nephew, Theron Kappes, along with many relatives, and close friends upon her death.

Her life will be celebrated at a service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday November 28 th , 2022, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel 1235 Junction Avenue Sturgis, SD.  Visitation starts at 10:00 a.m.  She will be laid to rest in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD, following the service.
