Apple Valley, MN - Catherine S. Barker, age 80, formerly of Sturgis, SD, died Sunday, July 6, 2014, at her residence.

Catherine was born to Thomas and Catherine Scott on February 24, 1934, in Glasgow, Scotland. She immigrated to America at the age of 21 and was employed as a Nanny. Shortly after, she joined the Women's Army Corp where she was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. It was during her service that she met and married Duane Barker. Upon completion of her military service they resided in Sturgis, SD. They had two sons, Scott and Todd Barker.

Catherine graduated from Black Hill State in 1971 with a degree in Speech/Communications. She had a long career as a substitute teacher in Dowagiac, MI, and Sturgis, SD. In 1980, she was divorced and moved to Denver, CO, where she began her career with the Federal Government. At her time of retirement (2001), she was employed by the Office of Drug Control Policy in Washington, D.C.

Catherine is survived by her son, Scott Barker, and his wife, Kim, and two grandsons, Bryan and Matthew Barker, all of Apple Valley, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John and Archie; her sister, Bette; and her beloved son, Todd Barker.

A viewing will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel from noon until 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors presented by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard. A reception will follow at the Sturgis Presbyterian church.
