Cecil E. Walston, 94, Sturgis, died Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at the Foothills Assisted Living Facility in Sturgis, SD.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and resume one hour prior to the services at the United Methodist Church on Saturday. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Sturgis with Pastor Keith Nelson officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. CST at the cemetery in Kennebec, SD.
Cecil was born on September 25, 1911 at Ida Grove, IA to Clarence and Ivah (Phelps) Walston, the youngest of four children. The family moved to Volga, SD where Cecil grew up and attended school. They later moved to Kennebec, SD where he met and married Bertha Andreen at Winner, SD on January 16, 1937. They moved to Redfield, SD where their four children were born. Cecil worked at Wilhelm's Pontiac Garage and the State School in Redfield. He was an excellent mechanic and parts man. In 1949, the family moved back to Kennebec, SD where Cecil worked at Merten's Chevrolet and his wife resumed her teaching career. They raised their four children there and in 1960 moved to Rapid City where he worked as a mechanic for 2 different Standard Oil stations and his wife, Bertha, taught in the Rapid City school system for many years.
Cecil loved hunting and fishing. He played many musical instruments by ear and was an avid reader.
Survivors include his sons Clarence "Bud" Walston and his wife, Mary, Phoenix, AZ, Wendell "Wally" Walston and his wife, Donna, Phoenix, AZ, two daughters, Ivah Smith, Phoenix AZ, Donna Mayer and her husband, Dan, Sturgis, a special niece, Wanda Williamson, Sioux Falls, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha, two sisters, one brother and one son-in-law, Marvin Smith.
Memorials have been established to the United Methodist Church and Hospice.
