Charles Eugene Jones was born April 7, 1928 in Salt Lake City, UT to Charles Franklin Jones and Zillah Faye Ericson. Charles attended school in Elmo, UT., later receiving his GED. Charles was the oldest of 5 children. Dad leaves behind his wife Barbara; one son, Roy (Kimberly), four daughters, Barbara Petty (Dale), Loa Faye Dickinson (Lonnie), Kathleen Moore, and Ellen Wendt (Kevin); 17 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren; one brother, Maurice Jones and three sisters; Kathryn Jones Mathie,Veda Merline Jones and LaRae Jones Majors. As a young man, Charles helped his father farm, he rodeo'd and attended school. In 1947 he went to work in the coal mines in southern Utah and worked there until 1953. In 1949 he met and married his lifelong companion and best friend, Barbara Ellen McKee. They were married July 15, 1949 in Tooele, UT. From this love came 5 children, Barbara Jean , Loa Faye, Kathleen, Roy and Ellen. After leaving the coal mines, he engaged in a number of different areas, he was a salesman, and worked as a mechanic in Salt Lake City, and Tooele and later as co-owner operator of A&C Service in Grantsville, UT. In 1968 he moved his family to the Black Hills of South Dakota. The 1st summer was spent in Sturgis, SD, where Charles was employed as a fry cook, and thoroughly enjoyed this endeavor. In 1969, he moved his family once again, this time to Newcastle, WY, where Charles and Barbara opened Weston Manor Nursing Home. In 1974, they moved back to Sturgis, SD. After working as a mechanic at Ellsworth, He and Barbara went back in the nursing home business, this time running B & C Rest Home. Charles retired from the nursing home business in 2000. Even though he was retired from fulltime work, he never stopped being busy with life. Dad loved his family and friends and never new a stranger. His greatest joys were his bride, of 63 years, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and all the time he spent with them. He loved visiting with family and friends. Dad enjoyed attending church and serving in the temple and set that example for his family. Dad served 2 missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The first he served with Mother in the Bismarck, ND Temple. The second, he served as Transportation Coordinator for the Rapid City Mission, in Rapid City, SD for 18 months. Dad was a lifelong member of Boy Scouts and enjoyed the time he spent in scouts both as a scout and as a leader. From 1970 until 1997 he hiked the at Crazy Horse Monument pilgrimage with the scouts. His last hike being 16 months after heart surgery. Dad was be preceded in death by his parents. The following was written by his grandchildren and reflects the feelings of many: My anguish and heartache today is directly tied to the fact that my Lovely, Loving, Sweet, Wonderful Grandpa Jones passed away this morning. He is the rock that the foundation of my family is built upon. My Mother's father, he also did quite a job being a solid rock on my Dad's side of the family too. He changed the lives of everyone he ever came in contact with, of that I am certain! Gentle but strong, wise, kind, persistent, disciplined, and really just an amazing human being. He never asked anything of anyone that he hadn't already done himself. Never sent anyone down a road that didn't already have a beaten path worn from the soles of his own feet. Our God called home one of his greatest masterpieces this morning! I have all these things to say about him, but nothing I say will ever come close to measuring up to the man he was. He is only stronger now and free from the bondage of his worn and weary earthly body, which bore little resemblance to the lively spirit that was encased within!! I love you Grandpa, I love you so much!! My Grandpa Jones, you have achieved more in your life than anyone I know . You have meant so much To so many people it is impossible to tell how many lives you touched but you sure helped my life and I love you Grandpa. Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2012, with visitation one hour prior to service, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 2400 S. Baldwin St, Sturgis, SD. Burial will take place at a later date at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
