IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charlotte H.
Orr
March 14, 1903 – June 24, 2009
Charlotte H. Orr, age 106, Sturgis, entered into Heaven Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Charlotte was born March 14, 1903, in Dresden, Germany, to Max and Marie (Kaubisch) Lehmann. At the age of 4, Charlotte, her mother, sister, and brother set sail for America to join her father. They entered through Ellis Island and then came to South Dakota by train. Charlotte grew up on a farm near Spring Creek.
Charlotte married Amos Lester Orr September 14, 1926, in a double wedding ceremony with Charlotte's sister and fiance', Irmgard and Arthur Hardy. Charlotte and Amos homesteaded on a farm on Alkali Divide where they lived for 20 years. While living there, they farmed, ran a small dairy, raised poultry, and Charlotte always had a large garden.
Charlotte and Amos had two daughters, Audrey and June. In 1945, Amos took a job at Fort Meade, built a house in Sturgis, and moved the family.
Charlotte was the oldest charter member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was very active at Grace Lutheran, helping in the kitchen, belonged to Rachel Circle, and enjoyed attending Bible studies.
The most important things to Charlotte were her love for God, her family, her beautiful flowers, her big gardens, and cooking. She was always active with her grandchildren building snowmen, sledding, and making homemade donuts. She loved to play checkers with her great-grandchildren or anyone else that wanted to get beat. She was a member of the Idle Hour Club and the Senior Citizen's Center and Chorus. She decorated the tables at the Senior Center with her flowers for 15 years. She won numerous ribbons for her beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables at the county fair.
Survivors include one daughter, June and her husband, Philip Galvin, Salem, OR; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Melvin Meisner, Rapid City; sister-in-law, Florence Lehmann; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother and sister, one daughter, Audrey Meisner, and many other loved ones.
A memorial has been established to Grace Lutheran Church.
