Tilford, SD
Clair “Dick” Hagan, of Tilford, SD, passed away peacefully on Friday August 21,2026.
Clair was born March 6, 1931 at his parents’ homestead north of Midland to Adrian and Ethyl (Dennis) Hagan. He grew up on the ranch and attended school through the eighth grade. From an early age, Clair developed a strong work ethic and a love for ranching. He worked on nearby ranches in the Philip and Midland, SD area and on a railroad bridge crew before joining the military.
In 1950, Clair enlisted in the Army where he proudly served for three years. He was honorably discharged on May 14, 1953, and returned home to South Dakota.
On January 30, 1954, Clair reunited with and married the love of his life, Darlene in Midland, SD. Together they shared 70 years before the passing of Darlene. Their union blessed them with two wonderful daughters, Barbara and Janet.
Clair worked road construction and spent time living in the Badlands before finding his ranch in Tilford. In 1966, Clair and Darlene moved to Tilford where they built a life together centered around family and ranching. Clair milked cows and worked the ranch alongside his beloved wife. After they stopped milking cows, Clair and Darlene continued ranching for many years. Clair was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent countless hours milking cows, working in the fields, and caring for the ranch. He took great pride in his work and loved sharing his knowledge and passion for the ranching lifestyle with his family. His greatest joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved spending time and sharing his love for cows and the ranch.
Clair will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Barbara (David) Swane; four grandkids, Dean Szymanski; John Szymanski; Jerry (Rachel) Swane; Kristin Swane; six great-grandkids, Kaycee (Tyler) Zuschlag; Brayden Swane; Kinsley Swane; and a great-great- grandson Cyprin Zuschlag.
Clair is preceded in death by his wife Darlene; daughter Janet; father Adrian; mother Ethyl; brothers Verlyn and Wendell; sisters Phyllis, Shirley, Mary Lou, Diane, and Patty.
