Clarence Edward Halls, 91, Sturgis, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 23, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Gordon Higgins officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Clarence was born June 16, 1920, at Hot Springs, SD, to Ray and Emma (Heppner) Halls. He attended school in Hot Springs. Clarence married Agnes Bunderman and they made their home in Hot Springs with their four children. Clarence served in the US Army during WWII in the Burma, India, and China invasions. He was a rifleman with Merrills Marauders.
Following his honorable discharge, Clarence returned to Hot Springs where he worked for many years at the VA Hospital. He later moved to Oregon where he worked as a civil engineer.
Clarence married Sharon Remington in Oregon on February 17, 1967. When Clarence retired, they moved to Sturgis where they have lived since. They enjoyed wintering in Arizona for several years.
Clarence was a lifetime member of the VFW, the American Legion, DAV, Paralyzed Veterans of America and held many offices in each. He also received many awards for his service including Outstanding National Post Commander of Post 1640, Outstanding District 10 Commander, South Dakota DAV Volunteer of the Year, South Dakota Disabled Veteran of the Year, and a national award for VAVS service. He spent many summers fishing with his nieces and nephews and especially enjoyed fishing in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Canada. Clarence was very active in volunteer work at Fort Meade.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Halls, Sturgis, SD; three children, Clarence "Sonny" (Kandy) Halls, Hot Springs, SD, Barbara Lee, Phoenix, AZ, Mike (Debbie) Halls, Buffalo Gap, SD; four grandchildren, Shane (Kelli) Halls, Rapid City, SD, Chad (Cyndi) Halls, Hot Springs, SD, Michelle (Mike) Kessel, Bowdle, SD, and Cheri Reitmeier, Grand Forks, ND; and great-grandchildren, Rachel, Cassidy, Emily, Cardar, Caydan, and Connor as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gary; son-in-law, Michael Lee; stepdaughter, Melody Roe Halls; and two brothers, Mike and James "Duke" Halls.
A memorial has been established to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
