The burial will follow in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 2:00PM She was born Clarine Ann Gillies on September 15, 1934 at Clark, SD, to George Joseph and Alice R. (Krapp) Gillies. She attended Darlington Township School # 20 and then graduated from Clark High School in 1953. On August 19, 1953 she was united in marriage to LaVern "Bud" Peterson at Webster, SD. They had met some time earlier that year at a dance in Carpenter, SD. Bud was soon sent off to war oversees and Clarine did housework and babysitting for area residents. She talked proudly about her first car, a green Chevrolet, saving money while Bud was in Korea, and buying it before he came home. To this union, two sons were born, Brett and Steve. The couple moved around to several areas while he was in the service, among them being Colorado Springs, CO, Germany and back to Colorado Springs until his discharge. They lived in Clark, SD in the late 60's and later moved to Sturgis so they could be near Veteran's Healthcare for Bud as he had Huntington's Disease. After his death she continued living in Sturgis, then later moving to an acreage near Belle Fourche where she lived with her sons, both of who had the same disease as Bud. Brett passed away on October 30, 2006 and Steve now lives in a care facility in Menno, SD. Even though Clarine herself was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in late 1959, she has lived life to the fullest, never complaining about her pain or situation. You very seldom ever heard her speak ill of anyone and was always concerned about the care and comfort of others. Her family was faced with many health situations over the years, yet she held her head high, displaying a deep love for her sons. She loved nature and animals and was attentive to the little children in the neighborhood. Surviving her and grateful for having shared in her life are her son, Steve of Menno, SD; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Gillies of Dubuque, IA; three granddaughters, Regina Peterson, Brooke Peterson and Brianna Peterson; four great grandchildren and a host of cousins and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; son Brett; and siblings, Richard "Dick" Gillies, and Marie (Roy) Thompson. Services have been entrusted to the Black Hills Funeral Home of Sturgis and Furness Funeral Home of Clark.
