Colleen Ann (Rubel) Hammond of Sturgis, South Dakota, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on April 4th, 2022, at the age of 92.

Colleen was born on the family farm in Audubon County, Iowa, on March 31st, 1930, to Walter Johannes Rubel and Clara Marie Bonnesen. Colleen graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1948. She married Maurice Lee Hammond in February 1949, and to this union, three children were born: Stephen Carson, Heidi Marie, and Peter Johannes.

Colleen enjoyed many activities in her retirement including traveling, reading, puzzles, and watching her favorite television shows.  She loved watching and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, Iowa Hawkeyes, and absolutely hated the Green Bay "Pukers".  Colleen was extremely competitive and loved to play games of all kinds, especially Bridge, and spent many days and evenings playing with friends and clubs.  Colleen had a passion for cooking but, most of all, Colleen loved spending time with her family. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities and could fill up the room with her infectious laughter.

Colleen is survived by her daughter, Heidi (Troy) Nelson of Sturgis, SD; her son, Peter (Simona) Hammond of Ankeny, IA; her grandchildren, Katie (Jim) Vedder of Edina, MN, Jessica Hammond of Edina, MN, Lindsey (Roy) Ulrich of Summerset, SD, and Tyler (Lydia) Nelson of Harrisburg, SD;  and great grandchildren, Charlie and Celia Vedder, Sam and Alice Johnson, Mikayla, Ean and Madalyn Crouse, Alivia, Carson and Finn Ulrich, and Layla and Morgan Nelson, and many special nieces and nephews.

Colleen was welcomed into heaven by her son, Stephen; grandson, Josiah Crouse; her parents, Walter and Clara Rubel; siblings, LaVonne, Donald, Jack (Norma), and Robert (JoAnn) Rubel; and her beloved cat, Fred.

A celebration of life will take place on April 25th, 2022, at 12:30 pm at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis, SD. A graveside service will take place at the family plot in the Arlington Cemetery in Audubon, IA, at a later date.
