Daisy Merrill was born July 12, 1919, in rural Sully County. She left this world in the early hours of January 6, 2019.
Being in the middle of nine siblings, she was raised on the family farm bordering the Sully-Potter County line. After high school, she moved to the "big town" of Huron to pursue a job. She lived with her Uncle Art and Aunt Myrtle Carter. As fate would have it, she met a charming young man living next door, Alvin Plumb. She married the love of her life on May 25, 1942, while he was in the Army during WWII. While he was stationed overseas during the European campaign as a medic, she began working for Armour's Meat Packing Plant in Huron as a meat trimmer. She continued employment there until September 1976 when she retired. They bought their home near Piedmont, where they lived until Alvin died on February 1, 1992. Daisy continued to live there until the evening of December 26, 2018, when a major stroke took her away.
Daisy was a special mother. Her steadfast strength was evident through four bouts of cancer, an emergency appendectomy, and an experimental TAVR operation. Her will to live was so strong, but we had to let her go.
She is survived by her daughter, Reneé Plumb and "better half", Bill Opsahl; her sister and best friend, Dorothy Roseland; and her sisters-in-law, Sharon Merrill, Phyllis Merrill, and Bev Merrill.
She joins in Heaven, her beloved husband, Alvin; her siblings, Dora Archer, Ray Merrill, Ben Merrill, Allen Merrill, Robert "Bud" Merrill, Don Merrill, Charles "Chuck" Merrill, and Ed Merrill; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Merrill, Viola Raymond, Hazel Bartels, and Sybil Plumb; her brothers-in-law, Robert "Bob" Roseland, Ed Archer, and Charlie Bartels; and so many beloved nephews, cousins, and friends.
We are truly blessed to have this family! Your deer, turkeys, and rabbits will miss seeing you at the house, Mom!
A visitation will be held 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 11, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont with Pastor Karl Kroger officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
