Dale Brooks was born January 14, 1941, in New Underwood, SD, to Marvin and Alice Brooks. He grew up in Philip, SD, with his four brothers; Arlie, Darral, George, and Gary. He graduated from Philip High School in 1959. He then went on to attend Huron College and Black Hills State College on full athletic scholarships. When he wasn't in school, he would work for his dad driving heavy equipment to build dams. He graduated from Black Hills State College with a degree in secondary education.
During his time at Black Hills State College, he met Ellen Purcelli. They were married on June 26, 1965. Dale went on to teach and coach in Martin, SD, for six years and then Sturgis, SD, for 23 years. During this time they had three daughters: Vicki, Kristi and Laura. His honors include receiving high school teacher of the year while working at Sturgis Brown High School. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in both Martin, SD, and Sturgis, SD, for his successful years coaching high school athletics. He retired in the spring of 1997 from teaching, but continued to work with his brothers on the family farm in Philip until 2008.
His many interests include golfing, playing pool, playing bridge, reading the newspaper every morning, and driving anything with a motor: car, truck, tractor, combine, Caterpillars, golf cart, and lawn mower. He enjoyed socializing with friends and spending time with family. He loved teasing his grandchildren every year by telling them he was getting them a hot dog for their Christmas present.
