Obituary

Darrell Dean Lutz, 74, of Whitewood, South Dakota, passed on May 28, 2022, at Monument Health Rapid City.

Darrell was Born on November 8, 1947, to Gottlieb and Martha Lutz in Lemmon, SD. He was the first of five children. His early years were spent in Bison, on the Lutz homestead, until moving to the farm south of Haynes. He attended Haynes school through his freshman year and then graduated from Hettinger High School.

He spent many years working in oil exploration, the experiment station in Hettinger, and working various other jobs until his retirement, when he helped Jim (Wizzy) Strand (long-time family friend) on his ranch near Shadehill, between fishing and hunting trips.

His favorite thing was sharing his passion for the outdoors with his dad, brothers, friends, and his nieces and nephews. Few people were around Darrell without him being a part of anything outdoors. He was with many of them for their first gun, fishing pole, deer, fish, or eventful boating mishap. Nothing brought out his distinct chuckle like out-fishing his dad, or shooting guns at a high rate of fire, the bigger the boom the better.

He was the best at listening to or telling "fish" stories. Some of his best ones were just on the believable side, minus the person that was with him being around to back it up. It was an art for him. However, if you ever went fishing or hunting with Darrell, you were often privileged to witness some of his luck either getting the big fish of the day on the last cast, or the trophy buck right before the season ends.

We were all lucky to have him as a son, brother, uncle, and friend. He is responsible for several firearm, camouflage, and fishing tackle addictions within his nieces and nephews, and was an irreplaceable hunting and fishing companion for anyone that needed one.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Gottlieb and Martha Lutz; brother, Douglas Lutz, and sister-in-law, Rose Lutz.

He is survived by his brothers, Roger (Cathy) Lutz, Rodney (LeeAnn) Lutz; and sister, Sheila (Ray Kinghorn); nieces and nephews, Tricia and Terry Marks (Tyler and Tanner), Chad and Missy Lutz (Rowan and Arlis), Lex and Samantha Kinghorn, Chance Kinghorn (Luke), Chelsea and Shawn Skogen (Tucker, Tyson and Jonah), Kodi and Nathan Schaefer, Katie Garcia (Cash, Gabriel and Gracie), Lane Rovere, Taylor and Rachel Rovere (Barret and Wren), Chase and Shelby Rovere (Kade), Heidi and Jon Mollman (Jessica, Megan (Cameron), Jacob, Madison).

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Onge Roughrider 4-H Club.
