Darrell "Smitty" Elmer, Schmidt, 89, Rapid City, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.
A memorial has been established.
Smitty was born August 25, 1919 at Hutchinson, MN, to Edward and Martha (Poffol) Schmidt. After completing his education he joined the US Army and served his country honorably. After his discharge he returned to Minnesota and worked as a cattle buyer and auctioneer. He also trained horses in Iowa and Minnesota.
He married Marilyn Martens in Hutchinson, MN.
Smitty moved to Rapid City in October of 1972 where he worked in the construction trades. In 1987 he started working for the Central States Fair as a carpenter and groundsman. After retiring he moved to Fort Meade for a short time before moving to New Underwood.
Survivors include his son Kevin (Patty) Schmidt; Box Elder, SD; one grandson, Jade Schmidt, Box Elder; and numerous cousins.
