David Juno Sundstrom, 60, Moorcroft, Wyo., died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
David was born April 5, 1947, in Deadwood, to Juno M. and Elizabeth (McTighe) Sundstrom. David lived near Maurine, S.D., as a young boy. He also lived in Lead, Whitewood and Sturgis. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1965.
David worked at the Bargain Barn in Sturgis while attending high school, and also for his uncles, Wayne Sundstrom and Joe McTighe. After one year of college at Black Hills State in Spearfish, he moved to Texas and worked until he was drafted into the US Army in 1968. He served in Vietnam with the field artillery for 12 months and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
David married Ann Kortan at Geddes, S.D., on July 7, 1973. They had three children.
David worked construction in Colorado before moving to Moorcroft, Wyo., where he ran an auto repair shop with his father for seven years. He returned to construction and helped his parents manage the VFW Club in Moorcroft.
He was active in both the VFW and the American Legion, serving as post commander and district commander for the VFW and district commander for the American Legion. He was Senior Vice Commander for the VFW, department of Wyoming at the time of his death.
He was active in many sports growing up and he continued to love all sports, especially car racing and he always enjoyed shooting a round of golf.
David loved dogs, cookies, tinkering with cars and good old country music.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his parents, Juno and Elizabeth Sundstrom, Moorcroft, Wyo.; sons, Alan Sundstrom, Gillette, Wyo., and Kevin Sundstrom, Moorcroft, Wyo.; daughter, Amy Sundstrom, Moorcroft, Wyo.; brothers, Darrell (Emily) Sundstrom, O'Fallon, Mo., and Carl (Marsha) Sundstrom, Mt. Clare, W. Va; sister, Betty (Rhea) Trevino, Deadwood; grandsons, Dosey, Peoria, Ariz., and Gavin, Sundance, Wyo.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and very special friends, Mike and Raylene Connelly.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Fr. Bill Zandri officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established for cancer aid and research through VFW Post #8473, PO Box 527, Moorcroft, WY, 82721.
