Dean Weslie Allen was born May 25, 1935 in Sturgis, SD to Clarence and Emma (Shafer) Allen. They Lived on Clarence's home place at Opal, SD. He went to a country school located about one mile - as the crow flies - from his home and then he went to Faith to high school. The best time that he had during high school was riding bulls in the rodeos. After his junior year, 1952, he joined the Navy. He was an E3 Electrician on the USS Dixie during the Korean Conflict. In 1956 Dean received an honorable discharge, from the Navy, after being injured when his ship was hit with a torpedo. After the Navy, he traveled around for quite awhile working many different types of jobs. He worked in the oil field, managed and cooked in some restaurants, electrical and carpentry work, road construction, head "powder monkey" while dynamiting the silos for the missile sites, and so on. . . In 1960, he met Annette Bean and had a daughter, Jo Ann. In 1961, Dean and Elaine were married in Rapid City. During their first years of marriage, they worked for Norman and McGee Vansickle a number of times, cut bug trees for the forest service and other jobs. In 1968, they had Laura Annette (Laurie) and then bought his home place from his father. Dean raised cows, sheep, and wheat and put up lots of hay. He also ground hay and sprayed crops with a plane, a pickup sprayer and a spray-coop. Dean always believed in working hard and then playing hard. He loved to hunt, trap, fish, camp with friends, riding snowmobile, motorcycles and anything else that associated with a motor and fun. Laurie remembers snowmobiling one whole winter and catching over 100 coyotes and over 70 fox. Dean and Elaine sold the place to the Dwayne Vig family in 1992 and moved to Belle Fourche where he presently resides.
