Obituary

Dean Elroy Gerry, 72, Sturgis, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at the VA Black Hills Health Care Center at Fort Meade.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel on Wednesday.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to the Hospice Unit at Fort Meade.

Dean was born July 25, 1940 at Sioux Falls, SD, to Harold and Eleanor (Overcash) Gerry. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged and returned to Sioux Falls.

He married Bonnie Garner at Rapid City on April 9, 1961.

Dean worked as a civilian contractor for the South Dakota Air National Guard. He joined the South Dakota Highway Patrol in 1968. In 1977 he was hired as the Chief of Police in Beresford, SD. In 1987 The family moved to Rapid City where they managed apartments. They returned to Sioux Falls where they continued to manage apartments before returning to the Black Hills in 2002. They managed Bethlehem Cave for two seasons before retiring to Sturgis.

Dean enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Bonnie Gerry, Sturgis; son, Scott Gerry, Sturgis; daughter Lila (Lenny) Neuroth, Beresford; brother, Gordon Grahm, Madison, WI; sister, Deon VanDenBerg, Sioux Falls, Janet (John) Wilcox, Sioux Falls, Kristy (Mike) Millikan, Lincoln, NE; also five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
