Obituary

Dean Elliot Oliver, 83, of Newell, SD, died June 11, 2015, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be on Monday, June 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Austin Auditorium in Newell with Pastor Sean Carney officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery, Newell.

Dean was born May 15, 1932, to Kenneth and Edna (Remington) Oliver in New Underwood, SD. Dean went to country school and then on to Sturgis High School. He married Phyllis McMains right out of high school in December of 1950 (60 years of wedded bliss).

The couple moved to the Newell area in 1952, bought a small farm, and over the years, expanded to a well-known farming/ranching operation along the Belle Fourche River south of Newell. They raised sheep, cattle, alfalfa hay, and kids. Those kids were Deb, Darla, Randy, Patty, and Penny.

For 25 years, Dean ran an excavation business in the community doing various projects for area farmers and ranchers while trying to build up the farm and ranch at the same time. He also invested himself in the community by serving as a 4-H leader, serving on the Newell School Board, and as a member of the Federal Land Bank board at various times.

Dean loved family and enjoyed having his grandkids and great-grandkids around him. We will miss his sense of humor and love of life.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Phyllis; his children, Debbie (Dave) Streets, Custer, SD, Darla (Tim) Creal, Tampa, FL, Randy (Connie) Oliver, Newell, SD, Patty (Carl) Sauer, Benton, LA, and Penny (Mike) Masters, Rapid City, SD; 2 sisters, Jeanne Pittman, Whitewood, SD, and Darlene Guthrie, Little Rock, AR; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carroll Oliver; a sister, Wilda Bachand; and an infant granddaughter, Jane Elizabeth Sauer.

A memorial has been established to the Newell Volunteer Fire Dept.
