IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Delayne John
"Red" Kinney
October 5, 1926 – September 27, 2016
DeLayne John "Red" Kinney was born October 5, 1926 in Faith, SD to John B. and Grace Marie (Boehrs) Kinney. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1944. After serving in the Army in WWII and Korea he returned to Sturgis where he met and married Lucille M. Wolf on April 16, 1955. Red worked for a short time for Peter Kiewit & Sons and then became a civil service employee. He worked on the installation of the Minuteman missiles while assigned to Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, SD, Whiteman AFB in Knob Noster, MO, and Minot AFB in Minot, ND. During those years he also had the opportunity to work on the Appollo Lunar Landing Module. He then worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Il. and Camp Walker in Daegu, South Korea. He was proud to have contributed to the manufacture of the US Army Bradley Fighting Vehicle. He retired from Civil Service in 1984.
After Lucille's death in 1990, Red was reacquainted with his high school sweetheart Shirley Raaen whom he married on October 14, 1993. He and Shirley moved from Aurora, Colorado to Sturgis in 1995. He enjoyed playing golf at the Boulder Canyon Country Club and he and Shirley loved to take car trips and sing duets. Golf and football (especially the Broncos!) were favorites on the tv and he took pleasure in feeding the birds and squirrels in the backyard and playing with his cats. If you came to visit he was sure to offer you a funny story, a cup of coffee and a donut hole but not the whole donut. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge.
