Derral Raymon Herbst, age 88, passed away on March 6, 2023, in Hawaii.
Derral was born in Faith, South Dakota on October 13, 1934. Derral spent most of his life in Hawaii. He graduated from Black Hills State University and went on to attain his doctorate's degree from the University of Hawaii. He was a very well-known botanist in Hawaii, he had worked for the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, the National Tropical Botanical Garden and the University of Hawaii.
Derral was also an author, co-writing several books, including, Manual of Flowering Plants in Hawaii, Manual of Flowering Plants in Hawaii Volume 2, Indexed Bibliography of Flowering Plants in Hawaii, A Tropical Garden Flora, Forum on Systematics Resources in the Pacific and Hawaiian Plant Life. Derral received the Engler Medal and several other awards for his books and work in botany. Derral also had several plants named after him because he either discovered them or named for him in his honor.
Derral was a very calming presence that was a bit of a loner and very intelligent. He will not only be missed by all of his family members, but by many others due to his contributions in his industry, that was also his passion.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Irma Bartling, and Albert Herbst.
Derral is survived by his sister, TerryAnn Whitmyre; and two twin brothers, Martin and Barton Bartling. There are also several nieces, Kristin Whitmyre, Kindra Whitmyre, Danielle (Bartling) Hunt, Denise (Bartling) Dobbs, and several other great nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis, SD, on Saturday, April 1, 2023, from 8:00am to 9:00am. A prayer service will be held at the White Owl Cemetery at 11:00.
