Donald Edward Bertalot passed away unexpectedly in his home on November 5, 2020, in Belle Fourche, SD, at the age of 68.
Don was born on July 17, 1952, in Spearfish, SD, to William and Violet (Johnson) Bertalot. He grew up in a large family with 11 siblings. As a teenager he could be found working alongside his mother in their family cafe. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1971. He soon married Teresa Wurl. After moving to Lead, Don began working for his father-in-law at a body shop, then Homestake Gold Mine as a miner, driller, and rescuer for many years. The couple had their only child, Shelley. His daughter remembers him as a hard working, loving, family man who would do whatever he could to help others. He was the best grandpa to Shelley's two daughters, Desiree and Taya, who had a very close relationship with him.
Don met his girlfriend, Paula, in 2010. He took in her daughter, Morgan, and her husband, Jonah, as his own family. He soon became a Papa to three more granddaughters. He was accomplished in many skills and talents including carpentry, fishing, hunting, camping, mechanics, painting/rebuilding cars, and so very much more. He also worked at the Spearfish sawmill for many years, he then retired in 2017. After retiring, He was often found outside fixing/building various items or found relaxing at Orman Dam with Paula, Shelley, Morgan, Jonah, his granddaughters, and multiple family members. He would gladly set up camp while everyone was working. He was the most generous man who loved helping anyone and everyone he could.
Don is survived by his daughter, Shelley LeFebre; girlfriend, Paula Basker; step-daughter, Morgan (Jonah) Pickett; granddaughters, Desiree (Garrett) Ford, Taya LeFebre, Aubree, Emmilyn, and Sawyer Pickett; great-grandson, Corbin Ford; sister, Dee (Dallas) Roadifer; brothers, Bill (Sally) Bertalot, Terry (Marlena) Bertalot, Ken (Angie) Bertalot, Denny Bertalot, Charles Bertalot; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, William Bertalot; mother, Violet Bertalot; brothers, Jim Olson, Leroy Olson, Jerry Bertalot, Johnny Bertalot, and Danny Bertalot.
Visitation will be Monday, November 9, 2020, from 5-7 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
