Don was born May 28, 1931, in Aberdeen, SD. He was active in sports during his school years. He attended Northern State University and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Business Special Fields.
Don was in the United States Air Force from October, 1951, until August, 1957, and served overseas for 14 months. Don worked as a Flight Instructor for Aberdeen Flying Service before Governor Ralph Herseth hired him to pick up a C-45 twin engine aircraft from the S.D. Air National Guard and take it to Pierre, SD, for use by the Governor. He worked for the State of South Dakota for twenty years and was instrumental in promoting the use of Beechcraft King Air Turbo-props for their safety. During his tenure with the State of South Dakota, Don was the Chief Pilot for five different Governors including Governors Ralph Herseth, Archie Gubrude, Nils Boe, Frank Farrer, and Dick Kniep.
Don was a successful businessman for over 50 years, owning businesses in Deadwood and Wall, SD. He married his wife, Louise Scofield, on March 1, 1959.
Donald John Achtien, 87, of Rapid City, died April 22, 2019, at his home.
Don is survived by Louise and their four children, Briget Mutchler (Mike), Steven Achtien, Temple Wray, and Tammy Achtien Pound (Chris); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brother, Robert Achtien.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2019, at American Legion Post 22 in Rapid City. Inurnment, with military honors, will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
