SPEARFISH - Donald L. Barbour, 89, Spearfish, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Edgewood Vista in Spearfish.
Visitation will be at Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and at the Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont from 5:00 p.m. until time of Rosary Services, which are set for 7:00 p.m. at the church. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church with Father Mark McCormick and Msg. William O'Connell officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will be at 1:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Don was born October 9, 1917, in Belle Fourche, SD, to John J. and Anna B. (Dean) Barbour. He grew up in Belle Fourche and graduated from high school in 1935. He worked at various jobs in the Black Hills area, including the sugar beet and the bentonite plants. Don married Chloe I. LaFortune on November 24, 1938, in Belle Fourche and they moved to a farm in the Highmore area. Don served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was recalled during the Korean conflict. Following his honorable discharge, they returned to Belle Fourche in 1950 and moved to Sturgis in 1962 where he lived for almost 40 years before moving to Rapid City in November 2003. He moved to Edgewood Vista in Spearfish on April 30, 2005, where he has lived since.
Don was treasurer of the Fort Meade Union for 11 years. He was a member of the National Guard for 30 years. Don was a member and very active in the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include one son, Stephen L. (Vicki) Barbour, LaPine, OR; one daughter,J. Diane Clarke, Piedmont, SD; two brothers, T. Jay (Roberta) Barbour, Florida, and John R. (Georgia) Barbour, Golden, CO; and one sister, Mary Schumacher, California; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2005; one son, Donald Edward and one grandson, Bryce Jon Barbour in 1980; one brother; and three sisters.
A memorial has been established to Edgewood Vista in Spearfish, SD.
