Obituary

Sturgis - Donald E. Byrum, 76 of Sturgis, left us on Monday, August 29, 2011 just before midnight at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Ft. Meade, South Dakota. He was born June 27, 1935 in Deadwood, South Dakota to Howard and Grace Byrum; were he lived and graduated from Lead High School. After high school he joined the Army for four years then was discharged an joined the national guard until 1962. At this time, Don began working for the Homestake Gold Mine; he worked there for 39 years and then retired. After retiring from Homestake, he started his second career of working on the Deadwood Trolley. Don did this for 17 years; during this time he moved to Sturgis with his wife Judy. Survivors include his wife of 25 years Judy Byrum, Sturgis; two sons, Tony (Tammy) Byrum Westminster, Colorado and Tim (Mary Lou) Byrum, St. Louis, Missouri; a step son, Londell White; two step-daughters, Julayne (Rick) Brown, Haxtun, Colorado and Joelle (Brian) Meade, Deadwood, South Dakota; a brother, Bob (Alice) Byrum, Phoenix, Arizona; one sister, Maxinne (Jim) Rainer, Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; five step-grandchildren and four great step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Beth Langthen. Upon Don's request cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 9, 2011, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Chaplain (Ret.) Herbert B. Cleveland officiating and military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard and the South Dakota National Guard. Don is loved by all and he will be greatly missed. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in Don's name.
