Donald D. Hanna died peacefully on February 24, 2024, in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Don was born to Berniece and Glenn Hanna on March 20, 1939, in Spencer South Dakota. He was raised with 3 loving and hysterical sisters, Sharon, Joan, and Carol.

While spending much of his youth participating in sports, hunting, and work, Don accumulated great experiences with fun-loving aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, and friends. Many of Don's uncles served in the military, a fact Don was proud to share. Don's oldest son Dan, followed in those military footsteps having proudly served in the Army National Guard and Navy.  Don loved Spencer and McCook County, South Dakota, and enjoyed sharing stories of his youth, in particular stories of his track and basketball teams.

After a brief time at Black Hills State University and Dakota Wesleyan University, Don graduated from the University of South Dakota with his accounting degree. He was proud of being a Coyote. Each of Don's children graduated from "the U". To say Don's blood was a particular shade of Coyote red, would be an understatement.

While attending the University of South Dakota, Don's college roommate introduced him to Linda Bennett of Alexandria, South Dakota.  Don and Linda were married on June 23, 1961, and remained so for the next 62 years. Linda now resides in Spearfish, South Dakota. Their three children are Dan (Beth) of Fort Myers, Florida, Debbie of Rapid City, South Dakota and David of Rapid City, South Dakota; and two grandchildren, Jakob Hanna (Sioux Falls, SD) and Abbi McGaffey (Matt) of Washington, Iowa. Don was a proud Grandpa.

Don was a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) spending much of his career in agri-business. He used his business acumen and quick wit to be an exceptional teacher and create valuable relationships with farmers. When asked what CPA stood for, Don would respond, "Constant Pain in the Ass".

Don's last couple decades of life, seemed to be his best, becoming more introspective and realizing what a gift it can be to ask for and receive forgiveness. During these years, Don had a myriad of health issues but persevered through many of them. His family is grateful for the caring support of Dr Gregg Harvison, who became not only Don's physician but his friend; and the staff at Monument Health Hospice House (Rapid City) who made Don's final moments peaceful. We are grateful for the gift of Don as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, son, and friend.  He is now free of his broken body and at peace. Thank you to all who knew and loved him. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Joan and Carol.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024 (11:30am to 3pm), at the Spencer South Dakota Community Hall. A Time of Remembrance will occur at 1 pm and a lunch will be served.
