Obituary

Donald Reed, age 80, died on September 12, 2007, at the Fort Meade Medical Center in Fort Meade, SD. He was born on July 28, 1927 in Ottawa, KS to Earl and Marquerite Reed. He grew up on a farm near Homewood, KS until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. In 1948, he married Mary Ramsbacher at Glasgow, MT. They traveled around the eastern part of Montana until moving to North Dakota in 1954. They resided in the towns of Bismarck, Jamestown, Selfridge, and Fort Yates, respectively until moving to South Dakota in 1973. They lived in Sturgis and Rapid City. He spent the last twenty-two years in New Salem, ND while traveling south to Arizona and California for the winters. Don considered it a good day if one could go fishing and when the waters were not conducive to this sport he had other pastimes. He collected and tumbled rocks, panned and mined for gold, and hunted. His early years were spent in and around the farming scene, so he always found pleasure in a patch of ground that could turn into a little garden spot. There was a special place in his heart for all of his grandchildren and the stories of them were often recounted with laughter. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and is survived by five daughters and two sons and their spouses: Linda (Dan) Frohlich, Drayton, ND; Patricia (Ken) Hopfauf, Rapid City, SD; LaDonna (Al) Reed-Fralich, Rochester, MN; Mary (George) Wells, Omaha, NE; Daniel (Paula) Reed, New Cumberland, PA; Robert (Wendy) Reed, Sulphur, LA; Bonnie (Bruce) Abraham, Menoken, ND; one brother Fred (Julia) Reed, Wellsville, KS; thirteen grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held at a later date.
