November 30, 1931 – January 16, 2022
Donald Charles Workentine was born November 30, 1931, to Sara (Willms) and Jacob Workentine in Dresden, ND, and died January 16, 2022, at Department of Affairs Fort Meade VA Hospital in Hospice care.
Donald graduated from high school at Greenbush, MN, in 1950, and received a $100.00 scholarship that he used at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. He graduated with honors in 1954, with a major in English and a minor in German. He taught English in Zeeland, ND, and Grace City, ND, followed by 2 years in the Army. He was stationed in Germany as a tank commander in the 4 th armored division. After his discharge he taught 11 years in Carrington, ND. It was there he met and married his wife, Doris Paulson, and they had 3 sons.
In 1970, the family moved to Sturgis, SD, and Don taught another 19 years. He retired from SD National Guard in 1992. He was a member of Kiwanis, American Legion, Sturgis Literacy Program, teaching adults to read and write, Grace Lutheran Church, and Boulder Canyon Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris Workentine; sons, Robert (Sandy), Thomas (Shari), Richard (Mara); five grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and many nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gary, and Lloyd; sisters, Frances, Joyce, and Florence.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 24, 2022, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis, SD. Interment will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
