Donna Mae (Haines) Johnston of Spearfish, SD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 30, 2022, after battling health issues. She was 78 years old.
Donna was born to Lillian and Charles Haines in Huron, SD, on June 10, 1943. She was the youngest of Lillian and Charlie's 5 children. They lived briefly in Huron and then Charles moved his family to Seattle, WA. Donna spent the remainder of her childhood in Seattle, Bremerton, and Yakima, WA.
While living in Bremerton, she met and married a sailor, James Luze, in 1960. They made their home in Bremerton, WA, until James was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. They moved their small family to Elkton, SD, and briefly farmed with Jim's father. In 1972, they moved to Lead, SD, where Jim found employment with Homestake Gold Mine. Donna worked at Black Hills Special Services for the better part of her career.
Donna later married, LeRoy Johnston and they made their home in Deadwood, SD, for many years until finally retiring to Spearfish, SD. Donna and LeRoy enjoyed fishing and camping, playing cribbage, and attending rummage and auction sales. She cherished her friendships with Tina, Mary, and Jeanneane. Donna so enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved family reunions and having cookouts at her son, Jim's.
Donna is survived by her son, Todd (Kathy) Luze of Lead, SD; her daughter, Vonda (Shane) Storley, of Britton, SD; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donna was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; daughter, Linda; and son, James.
A committal service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
