Obituary

Doris A. Bastian, 79, Union Center, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Lippold Hospice Unit of the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center.

Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A prayer service begins at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to the Central Meade County Ambulance Service.

Doris was born at Pine Creek, near Opal, SD, on July 25, 1929, to Dewey and Ruth (Phillips) Overland. After completing enough grades to obtain her teaching certificate, she began teaching in country schools. From 1948 until 1950 she taught at the Tama School.

On June 15, 1949, she married Merle C. Bastian at Lemmon, SD.

Doris returned to teaching at the Pine School. In 1961 she began teaching at the Lucerne School and continued at Squaw Butte, Atall, Stoneville and Enning School and from 1966 until 1969 at Union Center. She retired from teaching in 1971 but returned as a substitute and teachers aide from 1971 until 2002. She was a substitute and aide in many rural country schools in Meade County.

Doris enjoyed her garden, yard, flowers and her birds. She raised bum lambs and kept chickens. She enjoyed canning and was known for her cooking.

Doris was a former member of the South Dakota Education Association.

Survivors include her son Gale Wayne Bastian, Union Center; daughter Sheila Kay (Jim) Hostetter, Red Owl; brothers, Clayton Overland, Whitewood, Wayne (June) Overland, Union Center, Jack (Kay) Overland, Red Owl; sisters, Shirley (Zearl) Drum, Faith, Norma (Melvin) Hauser, Faith, Barbara (Richard) Isaacs, Faith, Pearl Strong, Union Center; grandsons, Tucker (Lexy Inghram) Hostetter, Faith, Troy (Ann Marie) Hostetter, Belle Fourche; 3 step granddaughters, Erin Cordie, Rapid City, Erica Cordie and Carly Jeffers, both of San Diego, CA; 5 great grandchildren, Tate and Tanner Hostetter, Tyce, Trinity Hostetter, Kaston LeLacheur; three step great grandchildren, Treyson, Jeriah and Jaida Cordie; and her dog, Tippy.
