Obituary

Doris M. Clarke, 87, Sturgis, died Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.

Memorial services will be held Monday, May 13, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Committal services were held in January.

Doris was born November 6, 1925, at Sturgis, SD, to Roy and Marie (Lorang) Sparks. She was the younger sister of Blanche and older brother, Floyd. Another brother died in infancy. Doris's father owned a grocery store in Sturgis and was the mayor of Sturgis for several years.

Doris graduated from Sturgis High School and Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She worked as a professional designer in Washington, D.C. Margaret Truman took part in theater productions directed by her brother, Floyd, and Doris remembered sitting with the President at some of the performances.

Doris married sports commentator and emcee, Joe McKenna, and the couple lived in Denver and Florida, traveling together all over the country for his work. As Joe's health deteriorated, they moved to Sturgis and opened a gift shop. After Joe's death, Dorie, as she was known to friends, made her permanent home with her widowed mother in Sturgis in the house her father built in the nineteen twenties. Dorie cared for her mother as she died of cancer.

Dorie was active in community affairs and was part of a group called "The Tuesday Girls", that was instrumental in founding the Sturgis Arts Council. She served on the board of directors for the Mount Rushmore Society and the High Plains Heritage Center and was at one time executive secretary for the national association of Outdoor Writers of America. She was a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. She also worked at Dora's Dress Shop in Sturgis and at Prairie Edge in Deadwood.

In 1991, Dorie married long-time friend, attorney David J. Clarke of Denver. They lived in Arizona and Sturgis until Dave was forced for the sake of his own health to commit her care to the Dorsett Home in Spearfish where she died.

Dorie was a bright and lively woman with a quick wit and great compassion for anyone who had experienced misfortune. She enjoyed playing music on her electric organ; hunting and fishing with her husband, Joe, and their dog; her home, relatives and friends; and golf with her husband, Dave. She was intensely loyal to Sturgis and the Black Hills.

Dorie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and two brothers, and her husbands, Joe McKenna and Dave Clarke. She is survived by several cousins and two step children.
