Obituary

Doris Evelyn Forbes, 100, Spearfish and formerly of Sturgis, died March 12, 2012 at the Garden Hills Assisted Living Center in Spearfish.

Visitation will be 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.

Memorials have been established to the Hospice of the Northern Hills and the First Presbyterian Church.

Doris was born December 6, 1911 near Plainview, SD, by Narcell Creek. She grew up on the family ranch and attended rural country schools. She attended Black Hills Normal and received her two year teaching certificate. She taught at Pedro, Opal, and Red Owl.

Doris married James John Forbes at Belle Fourche on March 10, 1934. The couple lived in Sturgis and Doris worked at Haley's Grocery and Chase's Department Store. Doris and Jim owned and operated the Big Bear Drive-In in Boulder Canyon for several years. She returned to Chase's before retiring to care for member of her family.

She was active in her church and United Presbyterian Women. She and her husband also worked with the youth of the church through the God Squad. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and the Rebbekahs. She was also active in several bridge clubs.

Survivors include her son Jim (Janice) Forbes, Nemo; also two grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one infant, and her brother, Ward.
